Price: $35 for members/$40 for guests

Please join us for our next luncheon on April 1 featuring an interesting talk by our Events Programmer Karin Rindal on the Global Seed Vault located in Svalbard, Norway.

According to Wikipedia, the Global Seed Vault (Svalbard globale frøhvelv) was started by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds that are duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault is an attempt to insure against the loss of seeds in other genebanks during large-scale regional or global crises.  The Norwegian government funded the entire construction of the $9 Million dollar vault.

Our speaker has a keen interest in gardening and is quite the seed expert. Here are a few words about her:

A trip to Green Animals Garden in Newport, RI and the discovery of a Morris County Master Gardener program announcement set off a chain of training and experiences that lead her to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown where she was a Morris County Park Commission Educational Assistant in the Cutting Garden the summer of 2006.  She was a New Jersey (Morris County Master Gardener) from 2006-2011.

Karin  also co-chaired  the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Annual Plant Sale 2006 – 2008 where she researched, organized, set-up and executed the three-day fundraising plant sale involving 10,000 plant purchases from twelve vendors. She coordinated activities of volunteer committees including donations, raffle, and publicity and print materials. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Arboretum.

For two years she wrote a regular weekly garden column for the Millburn/Short Hills Patch, an AOL subsidiary www.millburnpatch.com. She has taught gardening and cooking classes to adults and children at locations like the Summit Adult School, King’s Cooking School, garden clubs, to other county level Master Gardener groups, and to groups of customers at the Smith & Hawken store in Westfield, NJ until it closed in 2010.

She currently is a volunteer at the US Botanic Garden where she has assisted with a broad variety of educational events including presenting a class on sustainable container gardening.  Through her work at the Botanic Garden she completed the requirements for the New Jersey Environmental Stewardship program.

Please join us for our March luncheon featuring local Norwegian artist Liliane Blom!

The title of her presentation is Light and Nature; the Influence of Norway on my Work

Liliane Blom is a classically trained painter and award-winning photographer whose distinct style mixes her love of both media into a new one. She calls her fusion of painting and photography digital painting. Her pieces printed on canvas or watercolor paper are later enhanced with oils/pastels and often with gold or silver leaf. Based in Rockville Maryland of French/Norwegian extraction she is a frequent exhibitor in the Washington region. A poet at heart, she often incorporates words into her work.

Liliane is also an installation artist. Her installation art is environmental in scope and attempts to bring the vastness and beauty of the outdoors indoors through multi-sensory experiences. The purpose of her installations is to remind the onlooker in a way that is neither preachy nor overbearing, but experiential and meditative, of the world we share and are the stewards of. It is also meant to stir in the viewer’s soul, a longing for these places and a desire to commune with nature.

The artist's says: “The technique I use mostly these days, I call Digital Painting, it is based on my longstanding desire to merge painting and photography –15 years ago I was printing black and white images on canvas. I coated the canvas with silver emulsion, and later tinted and colored them by hand. It was a laborious and inexact process – but I loved the feeling of the canvas and felt frustrated with the smoothness of the photographic paper. Today I process my images digitally and have them printed on canvas or watercolor paper through the giclée process. Although it is still not a perfect process, one which requires several rounds of proofing and color corrections, it is very close to my dream of merging painting and photography into a single art.

I spend a great deal of time working on individual images, creating numerous layers, erasing, shifting and changing colors; I often end up with several versions of a single image. After they are printed, I finish the pieces with oils, acrylics, pastels, or loose pigments. I also enjoy further embellishing them with Silver, Gold, or Copper Leaf."

For a taste of Lilane's work, visit her web site: http://www.lilianeblom.com/

Please also note our new venue this time - The Captial Grille in Chevy Chase, MD.

Viewing of Private Munch Collection
Lakselaget DC Luncheon and Private Munch Collection Viewing November 2016 - 11:30
Price: Please contact us for more information!

On Saturday, November 5, Lakselaget DC will be meeting at the home of a private collector who has graciously offered to share --and enlighten us-- about her remarkable collection of art by the Norwegian painter and printmaker, Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944).  Munch's evocative treatment of psychological themes is well exemplified by his most famous work, The Scream, painted in 1893.

The number of attendees for this event is limited to 18 - contact us soon if you are interested in attending. We will meet for lunch at 11:30 and carpool to our host's residence from the restaurant.

Sarah (Sally) G. Epstein will share stories about Munch, her journey amassing one of the world’s largest private Munch print collections, and coming to understand the artist behind the images through a slide presentation and a chance to see her collection.

Ms. Epstein graduated from Oberlin College in 1948, and then attended the Simmons School of Social Work. While there she met an MIT student who loved jazz and modern art; she had not been exposed to either growing up. He took her to a modern art exhibit-a retrospective of oils and graphics by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. She fell in love with Munch's work. Since that time she has given prints to the National Gallery in Washington; eventually the entire collection will be given to the National Gallery, plus about 64 interviews she taped with Munch family, friends, models, neighbors, portrait subjects, etc. From the older Norwegians she learned much about life and customs in Munch's era in the late 19th and early 20th century. Several catalogues with her introductions or essays have been published, and she continues to give tours and lectures.

FILM SYNOPSIS:

Nestled in Norway's Sunnmøre region, Geiranger is one of the most spectacular tourist draws on the planet. With the mountain Åkerneset overlooking the village-and constantly threatening to collapse into the fjord-it is also a place where cataclysm could strike at any moment.

After putting in several years at Geiranger's warning center, geologist Kristian (Kristoffer Joner) is moving on to a prestigious gig with an oil company. But the very day he's about to drive his family to the city, Kristian senses something isn't right, and when that mountain begins to crumble, every soul in Geiranger has ten minutes to get to high ground before a tsunami hits, consuming everything in its path.

Those ten minutes are some of the most nerve-rattling you'll experience in any movie, but as THE WAVE continues the stakes only get higher. Director Roar Uthaug keeps things hurtling forward in a state of high anxiety until the very end.

Giving Hollywood a run for its money, the film's canvas is broad, its effects eerily realistic and its scale immense.

Running time: 105 minutes

Based on its northerly location—above the Arctic Circle and just 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) from the North Pole—the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard seems like it should be a barren land of snow, ice, and rock but Svalbard also has volcanoes, glaciers, warm springs emerging from the permafrost and landslides scattered across the landscape.Beginning in 2003 the US space agency NASA identified the Svalbard archipelago as a potential testing ground for future expeditions to Mars. Because the topography is so reminiscent of Mars it is proving to be an ideal location to test robotic equipment and to train astronauts who will be making a trip in the future.  Join us for the first of this season’s Lakselaget luncheons when NASA Astrobiologist Caroline Freissinet and  Space Scientist Dr. Jennifer Stern discuss their work and adventures in this region of Norway.

We will learn about the spectacular phenomena of the northern lights and other space-related atmospheric conditions common to the Polar Regions.  Uniquely qualified, Dr. Dyrud has led space-related missions and projects as head of the Earth and Space Science group at Draper Laboratory and previously as senior scientist and section lead at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in the areas of space physics, GPS tomography, Novel Earth observation missions, and mobile applications. His past experience as a Fulbright Scholar in space and plasma physics at the University of Oslo gives him first-hand knowledge.  Currently serving as President and CEO of OmniEarth, Dr. Dyrud will also talk out how OmniEarth produces a reliable, constant data stream and enhanced decision-making tools for clients in the agriculture, forestry, energy, civil and military markets … and everyone else who needs a more comprehensive understanding of Earth.
